3 February - Tunnel

I don't like posting a day late, but was too tired last night to download and proof. The high school team had a home match last night. They usually enter from behind the scorer's table, which is right in front of the mat. I didn't see them in the hallway and happened to glance off to the side to see our youth wrestlers tunneled up. I then realized that the varsity team was going to enter this way.

29 January - Morris County Wrestling Tournament

I'm late posting this, but we got home late - 10:30 pm - and then my washing machine decided to break. Not good when wrestling stuff needs to be washed for 8:00 am. Thank goodness my sister lives close by.

This is my weekend. We had 6 make it through to the next round so we are hoping they go the distance.

Here they are warming up - yes, this is their idea of warming up.

2009 Parsippany Tournament

Yesterday the MK wrestling team participated in the Parsippany tournament. The team had a really great day - placing 2nd overall (tied with Parsippany). They had 7 finalists - 3 1st place winners and 4 2nd place winners when the day was through - not to mention some 3rd's too. Yea Knolls!

Here are our 7 finalists - Jan Rosenberg, Adam Ramadan, Steven McKowen, Kevin Weis, Luke Homeijer, Steven Lane and Joe Flora.

Back Handspring

On Saturday, after team photos, the parents got to watch wrestling practice. Let me tell you I'm glad I'm not a wrestler!

I had no idea my 15 year old son could do a back handspring. Here's the proof -

Yesterday I got the opportunity to take the team photos for the yearbook and their end of the year book. These are some of my favorite teens!

30 May/365 - .about to get punched.

for the second time. You can see his face is already squished up from the first punch.

Instead of a regular cross face - the kid he was wrestling wound up and punched him sideways across the nose - trying to make it look like a crossface.

The ref warned the kid - the kid did it again and he was dq'd and thrown out of the tournament.

Guess he was mad that he was losing 10 to 2 to a freshman. He was a junior that placed second in his district. My son is a freshman that placed second in his district.

The season is over. I'm sad.

Going in as a freshman we hoped he would make the varsity team. After he made the varsity team, we were hoping he would get enough matches to earn his letter. Other than that we had no expectations for this year.

It turned out to be a great year! 19 wins - 9 losses. Made it to our District Finals where he placed 2nd and that second place got him to the Regions. He lost there and then promptly started eating.

He had great coaches and even greater teammates! I will miss the seniors and our stat girls (as they are seniors too).

21 Feb/365 - warm up before semis

We had 4 make it through the first round. When all was done we have two going to regions.

20 Feb/365 - contemplating districts

Friday night was the first night of our wrestling districts.

He made it through the first round Friday night. Won his semi (against a senior) and went onto the final where he came in 2nd. He was the only freshman in the finals. He now moves onto the Regions.

I didn't get any of him wrestling as I chose to video him instead.

21 Jan/365 - Lehigh Introductions

He always makes sure he turns the opposite way so I don't get his face.

MK v. Roxbury - we won 2 bouts. Thank goodness nobody got pinned or the 30-something to 6 score would have been a lot worse.

Our team is known as a "Young Team" this year. Most of the boys on the team don't start wrestling until they get to high school. It's hard to compete with other schools where everybody has wrestled since they were 6. There are only two on the varsity team this year who have wrestled that long - my son and other freshman. They are holding their own, but having a tough time because they are freshmen. A 14 year old body and and 18 year old body are way different!

But our feeder program has great numbers so hopefully in the next few years we will be back to the level we were at 3 years ago when we won districts.

Posts three days in a row! These are from the Morristown match last night. The team won and so did the boy (woohoo!) It was a tough match and he really wrestled fantastically to the end.
